Bronx, New York--A Bronx woman admitted, on Tuesday morning, to stuffing her dead roommate in a suitcase and ditching him outside an abandoned home. In response to the harrowing act, the woman insists she did nothing wrong.
Monique Exum, aged 36, stuffed her deceased roommate, Johnny Davis (aged 73), into one of the man's suitcases after she found his corpse in their Fish Avenue apartment on May 31. Exum claims she removed the body to avoid trouble; the woman's actions were prompted on a close friend's absurd advice.
"My friend told me if someone dies in your apartment you go to jail, so I got really afraid," Exum told police officers. "I had no idea what to do."
Heeding the illogical advice of her friend, Exum reportedly wheeled the suitcase down three flights of stairs, then across a few blocks, to the porch of an abandoned home at 1309 Needham Eve in Williamsbridge. After finding what she thought was the appropriate resting place of her deceased roommate, Exum wrote "rest in peace" on a strip of cardboard and left it atop the luggage.
Davis' corpse was crammed in the suitcase for over three months; the body wasn't discovered until Sunday, following a call from a suspicious neighbor. Investigators found the badly decomposed body of Davis shortly after the call concerning a "suspicious package." The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy later this week to determine the cause of death. Exum is being charged with improper body removal and is being held on a $500 bond.
Police continue to investigate the peculiar incident.
